cicass undergraduates have had an amazing
year. Both the group's honours project students
scored First Class honours classifications in their
final degrees & both also published their project
results at prestigious international conferences:
Matt (pictured left) presented a paper on the
development of Breath Figure Films at the IEEE
Engineering in Medicine and Biology meeting in
Vancouver, Canada. To boot, Matt's honours
project was also voted within the
top 3 of all
Materials related honours projects in the UK
at
the 2009
SET awards.
You can read Matt's paper here.

Pauline Axford (pictured right) presented a
poster at the world's largest optical
engineering conference, SPIE in San Diego,
and has since accepted a PhD studentship in
Biophysics/Bioengineering at the University of
Strathclyde.

URG news
Dr Campbell initiated the Undergraduate Research Group (URG) at Dundee University's
Carnegie Physics Laboratory in 2006. The principal purpose of the URG is to allow our present
cohort of students to participate with extracurricular research projects, often on topics of their
choosing, or alternatively in conjunction with ongoing research programmes. URG has
succeeded in adding a novel extra dimension to the degree experience for suitably motivated
individuals, and serves to introduce the exciting world of research to young minds, facilitating
independent exploration and experimentation with advanced, and often unique,
instrumentation. It is our belief that there is no better way to learn Physics than by actually
doing it for real. Certainly, our presently active URG members and the group
alumni have reaped the rewards of such an approach. Our present URG team has two Carnegie
Trust 2009 Scholars,
David Bajek and Stephen Pollard, and 3 EPSRC Summer 2010 Vacation
Bursary Awardees,
Calum McCune, Daniel Abigail and David Bajek. and several past members
have managed to attract other prestigious Scholarships & Bursaries before going on to take
research degrees or move directly into employment with industry.
