Q: What does the CICaSS logo represent?
A:  The central research focus for the group involves cavitation. We are especially interested in
the reaction and interaction of contrast agent microbubbles under ultrasonic incidence. Our aim
is to optimise bubble behaviour for useful therapeutic means, which means striking a balance
between overly violent interactions [which might inadvertently kill cells or cause collateral
damage to healthy tissue], and with reactions that are not strong enough to introduce any
beneficial bioeffect. Finding this optimal balance is thus a critical goal of our research.
Hence, a Yin-yang, the ancient representation of universal balance and complementarity, forms
the hub of the logo. The left half of the logo symbolises a bubble in a low pressure field and
thus at maximum radius, whereas the right half represents a collapsed bubble during the high
pressure half-cycle. Here, there is incorporated a blue-ish glow from the bubble core
representing sonoluminescence, which we typically find in 475nm locale [for Sonovue].
