cicass undergraduates have had an amazing
year. Both the group's honours project students
scored First Class honours classif-ications in their
final degrees & both also published their project
results at prestigious international conferences:
Matt (pictured left) presented a paper on the
development of Breath Figure Films at the IEEE
Engineering in Medicine and Biology meeting in
Vancouver, Canada. To boot, Matt's honours
project was also voted within the
top 3 of all
Materials related honours projects in the UK
at
this years
SET awards.
Pauline Axford (pictured right) presented a
poster at the world's largest optical
engineering conference, SPIE in San Diego,
and has since accepted a PhD studentship in
Biophysics/Bioengineering at the University of
Strathclyde.

Megan Griffiths (right), who undertook her
Advanced Higher Physics project in the CICaSS
BATCavE Lab, has achieved an amazing 2nd
place
nationally for her performance in AH
Physics in 2008. Megan also scored a
maximum 25/25 for her project work, and is
now set to receive a further award from the
IoP in recognition of her superb effort.

Irwin McLean (pictured left)(Division of Molecular
Medicine), together with Paul Campbell (CICaSS),
have won a
Medical Research Council Milstein
Award
. The £625K grant will allow us to develop
the next generation of ultrasonic tools geared
towards delivering RNAi therapeutics into skin.

Professor Sascha Hilgenfeldt (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)
visited the group during March in his capacity as visiting professor for our
present Basic Technology grant. During this time, Sascha gave a fascinating
colloquium entitled 'Foams, Flies and Functionals', during which he
demonstrated the incredible power of energy minimisation methods inspired
by evolving foam structures, to model the geometry of epithelial tissue in the
eye of the  fruit fly. Sascha's work drew a broad audience of biologists,
engineers, geneticists and physicists, and was of such a stimulating
standard that it led to a 25 minute Q & A session afterwards, - a new record!

Paul Campbell has won two prestigious awards for collaborative work with Japanese researchers.
In December, PC received the
Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Fellowship, which will
facilitate extended research visits to several leading institutions specialising in therapeutic
ultrasound, and including the world-renowned groups of Katsuro Tachibana (Fukuoka) & Takashi
Kondo (Toyama). This endeavour has now been bolstered with a 2-year  
Royal Society
International Collaboration Award
that will allow extended bi-lateral travel and collaboration.

GMTV gossip queen Lorraine Kelly joined the CICaSS team in
May to make a short documentary about the many pioneering
scientific and industrial breakthroughs that have been driven
by uniquely Scottish ingenuities. The film, which was shot
entirely on location in the group's BATCavE laboratory, focused
attention on the activities of a local inventor,
James Bowman
Lindsay
, who was a contemporary of Michael Faraday, and
who may, amongst several other key discoveries, have been
the first person to conceive of the incandescent light in its
modern form.
CICaSS technical expert Donald McLean
(pictured left) developed a best-guess
working model of Bowman Lindsay's  
apparatus, and demonstrated the striking
capabilty to an audience, hushed by shock
and awe at the brilliant luminosity.

CICaSS have taken possession of a new
ultra-high speed imaging system that makes
the snapping of speeding bullets (as above)
seem positively pedestrian. Operating at a
top speed of a million frames per second,
and boasting a cutting edge 100 frame memory buffer on a single CCD chip, we will be exploiting
our Shimadzu system to observe ultrasound activated events on the order of microseconds.

JSPS Fellowship Lectures
Paul Campbell recently gave a series
of lectures at four universities across
Japan, as part of his Japan Society for
the Promotion of Science 2009
Fellowship. PC also spent time
working in the research groups of
Professors Katsuro Tachibana at
Fukuoka, and Takeshi Kondo at
Toyama University.

New recruits: Dr Charlie Main
(right), who clearly savours the
freedom of the Balearics more than
most, has joined CICaSS as Deputy
Head of Group. Charlie will be giving
our modelling efforts a welcome boost.

Campbell
gives the invited plenary lecture at
the International Symposium on Bioelectronics
and Bioinformatics (ISBB2011) held in Suzhou,
China, under the auspices of the IEEE and the
Chinese Academy of Sciences.
